Feature Artist: Zoe Ellenberg

Zoe Ellenberg is a Melbourne artist who has spent much of her career travelling and exhibiting around the world. The wilderness of Indonesia, the South Pacific and Australia have been of particular inspiration to her, with their unique flora and fauna. Ellenberg's work is therefore influenced by this connection with nature: lush tropical, rainforests, mountains and seascapes are powerful imagery in her work. The energy of such places can be clearly seen.

Zoe's approach to application imitates the rainforest as its grows out of chaos, using a mixed set of media including inks, watercolour, acrylic, soft pastel, oil pastel, spray can and black linear enamel, growing and twining on the surface of high quality watercolour paper.

“Nature is my perspective inspiration and muse. I have a passion for the literal. Where the reef meets the tropical rainforest. Where mountains swell up from the sea and where the abundance of nature bursts into flower and birdsong. This passion has led me to the rainforests of Cape Tribulation in far north Queensland, Buderim Queensland, Bali, Lombok and the Gillis in Indonesia, Vietnam and the South Pacific. Corals, mangroves, swamps, forests, ferneries, epiphytes and orchids are my entire palette blasting with colour and life. My paintings grow as the forest does , like a vine organically twisting and turning, forging a leafy path. Sometimes I’ll use linear black enamels, a vapour of shocking colour as an inflorescence, here a drip spill of ink down from the tall canopy, here a blaze of sunset sky or aqua sea or drenching rain.” - Zoe Ellenberg.
