Feature Artist: Shane Bonsujet

Shane is a self taught abstract/naive artist based in Melbourne creating bright, bold and colourful works. Shane was born in Zimbabwe to Mauritian parents and grew up there until the age of 14 when his family moved to Australia.

Shane's work can best be described as emotionally driven, free-flowing and purely instinctual. Shane embraces imperfection - painting is an intuitive but cathartic process. He loves colour, the complexity of its use and application, colour matching/contrasting, negative space, restraint or freedom and uses this to capture the emotion of any piece. Shane uses mark-making often script/words appear in his works to help convert the complex or otherwise abstract visualisations.

'Safe Word' Painting by Shane Bonsujet

"In my early years I took a liking to painting wildlife and drawing cartoons. This quickly grew into a love for illustration, neo-expressionism and naive art, and this forms the basis of my work. I mainly work with acrylic paints as the foundation with oil sticks on top for the detail. I draw inspiration from my thoughts, knowledge, and life experiences which allow me an endless supply of reference."

"I'm passionate about music, self development and growth, history and culture as well as trauma, healing and love. This shows in my work as I've painted just about everything from Marcus Aurelius, Maya Angelou, Kurt Cobain down to Balenciaga and Ludovico Einaudi. I am constantly absorbing and learning from the greatest teacher of all, life. My work is not consistent about any one specific theme but I'm an over thinker and have often painted about social issues, ethnicity, identity and depression as well as more light hearted subject matters. Art is therapy for me and I'm healing myself one painting at a time."

Shane has exhibited in Melbourne and sold works across Australia as well as internationally.
